Stop the Fireworks Free for All

Following the devastating fires that have destroyed homes in Warstock and Kings Norton and numerous areas of parkland across Birmingham, including in Moseley Bog, Windermere Fields and Swanshurst Park we have received multiple messages from residents concerned about the continuing use of fireworks in this hot dry weather, even after a government national alert.

Izzy has sent a letter to the Chair of the Licensing and Public Protection Committee, Councillor Sam Forsyth, calling for the issue of fireworks to be added to the agenda of the next committee meeting on 9th September.

In her letter she refers to the petition submitted at full council in November 2025 by her colleague, Councillor Baber Baz.

The petition calls for Birmingham City Council to:

1.Tighten local licensing rules to restrict and better control the sale of fireworks.

2. Press the Government for stronger powers, so local councils can properly protect communities.

3. Work with the police and community groups to clamp down on illegal and antisocial use of fireworks.

She also refers to the government consultation launched in July on ‘Fireworks and Pyrotechnics in the UK‘

Izzy has asked if steps can urgently be taken to:
A: provide a response and any progress about the petition, especially around the request to tighten local licensing rules:

B: Ensure Birmingham City Council responds to the government consultation, considering the recent events and concerns of many residents across the area.

A community centre not serving the community.

Notice has been served by planning enforcement officers on the owners and tenants of a premises on Alcester Road near to Edgbaston Road East. The premises, an old factory unit is leased as a community centre, however it is being used almost exclusively for evening pre weddings and parties.
Izzy has received numerous complaints about anti social and obstructive parking, loud music, loud prolonged drumming and fireworks being illegally and dangerously let off in the street. It is not clear if any health and safety or fire safety checks have ever taken place.

Izzy has previously spoken to the organisation leasing the premises and brought the complaints to their attention, however nothing has been done to stop the issues continuing sometimes two or three times a week.

The owner and tenants have until 4th September to appeal the notice. In the event of no appeal being made they will need to cease all activity at the premises after 4th October..

They now have a chance to appeal the decision by planning enforcement and apply to regularise the use of the building as a community centre.
